The nade bake (smoothing brush) is traditionally used by Japanese scroll mounters for smoothing joined sheets when backing and seaming sheets of paper together. The nade bake is made of hemp palm. This brush is an indispensable tool for all kinds of collage and pasting jobs when using Asian papers.

Keep in mind that the smoothing brush is not to get wet; it is only used dry. As paste builds up on the tips of the bristles, causing them to stiffen, it is necessary to wash the excess paste off. By dipping the tips of the bristles in hot water and carefully scrubbing the bristles with a clean wet rag while holding the brush flat against a table, one is able to clean the smoothing brush. Shake the excess water from the brush and hang to dry.
