2024/2025 Studio Apprenticeship PrograM: Open call

April 2024

Mullowney Printing is pleased to announce an open call for our 2024/2025 Studio Apprenticeship Program! The Apprenticeship Program is an exciting opportunity for emerging artists working in traditional print media to expand their skills in professional studio practices, technical printing proficiency and historical & contemporary knowledge by working in a fine art print publishing studio. This year, we will select two individuals for two studio apprenticeship positions.

SEVILLA SIERRA RESIDENCY: NARSISO MARTINEZ

April 2024

Please welcome Narsiso Martinez to Mullowney Printing to begin his two-week stay as our next Resident for the Federico Sevilla Sierra Printmaking Residency. Named in honor of Mexican printer Federico Sevilla Sierra, the program aims to preserve traditional printmaking practices by offering artists of Mexican heritage space and support to create work, while building connections between diverse communities in Portland and beyond. Former recipients include Felipe Baeza, Nuria Montiel, Arleene Correa Valencia, and Mazatl.

Key funding for the Federico Sevilla Sierra Printmaking Residency comes from the generosity of the Arias Sevilla Family Charitable Fund. Learn more.

In partnership with a handful of talented instructors, we are elated to offer a series of seven incredible learning opportunities to our print community. Please note that space is limited! In order to facilitate the best learning experience for our attendees, most workshops are capped at 8 people.

We are pleased to announce Alyssa Aviles as the 2024 recipient of our annual Studio Apprenticeship Program! The Studio Scholarship program, funded through The Undergrowth Educational Print Fund (UEPF), is an exciting opportunity for young and emerging artists working in traditional print media to expand their skillsets in professional studio practices, technical printing proficiency, and historical and contemporary knowledge from a fine art print publishing studio. Former recipients include Alejandra Arias Sevilla, Lori Lynton, Sam Campanatico, and Erin Moore. Learn more.

NEW RELEASE: Jessica Jackson Hutchins

Portland, OR - Mullowney Printing is pleased to announce the release of ten new etchings by Jessica Jackson Hutchins. These works emerged from Hutchin’s residency in Fall of 2023, alongside collaborating Master Printer Paul Mullowney and Printers Harry Schneider, Cassie Ferguson and Erin Moore. Hutchins joined us as part of the Hallie Ford Fellows Residency Program. We are deeply grateful to The Ford Family Foundation for providing the funding to make these works possible!

Residency: Demian DinéYazhi

February 2024

We are pleased to welcome Demian DinéYazhi to Mullowney Printing for our first artist residency of 2024. Made possible by grant funding from the Ford Family Foundation, this is DinéYazhi’s first time joining us at Mullowney Printing. We are looking forward collaborating with them over the few months! Learn more.

We are also elated to share that Demian’s work will be featured in this year’s Whitney Biennial. Even Better Than the Real Thing, co-organized by Meg Onli and Chrissie Iles, opens to the public on March 20, 2024. DinéYazhi is among 69 artists and two collectives represented in the 81st edition of the Biennial.

NEWS: Gather:Make:Shelter Partnership

March 2024

Mullowney Printing is excited to announce an ongoing partnership with Gather:Make:Shelter, a Portland organization creating opportunities for people experiencing houselessness and poverty by engaging in collaborative, skill-building projects in creative fields. Over the next several months, we will host workshops in our studio. Ten unhoused artists will work on self-directed print projects with the assistance of Master and Assistant Printers from Mullowney Printing and Gather:Make:Shelter staff.

The workshops will result in a portfolio of prints and a traveling exhibition to begin in the fall of 2024. Learn more about the partnership.

Dodge and Burn collapses together images and objects referencing American colonialist expansion in the Philippines during the early 1900s, as well as contemporary racial politics and historical amnesia.

EXHIBITION: Storywork THe prints of marie watt at print center New york

Print Center New York presents Storywork: The Prints of Marie Watt, from the Collections of Jordan D. Schnitzer and His Family Foundation, the artist’s first traveling retrospective and the first to reflect on the role of printmaking in her ambitious interdisciplinary work. On view in the Jordan Schnitzer Gallery, the exhibition considers Watt’s printmaking both as a process and a philosophy—a medium that has had a nuanced and enduring impact on her career since 1996. Featuring over 50 works, it presents Watt’s etchings, lithographs, and woodcuts alongside a selection of her monumentally-scaled sculptures and textile works.

NEW RELEASE: OTIS KWAME KYE QUAICOE

Mullowney Printing is pleased to announce the release of a new etching by Portland-based artist Otis Kwame Kye Quaicoe, in partnership with the Portland Art Museum. This is Otis’s first etching, a self portrait in direct copper plate gravure, with chine collé and a screenprint overlay in an edition of 50, signed and numbered by the artist, on Somerset cotton rag. 100% of the proceeds from the sale go to support the Portland Art Museum’s Endowment for Black Art and Experiences as part of their Connection Campaign.

EVENT: Marie Watt in Conversation (in conjunction with IFPDA Print Fair)

We are excited to share that Mullowney Printing founder and co-director, Paul Mullowney will join Watt and Master Printers Julia D'Amario (Sitka Center for Art & Ecology) and Marjorie Devon (Director Emerita of Tamarind Institute), in conversation on Friday, February 16 from 2:00- 3:00 PM. This conversation with Watt’s collaborating printers will illuminate Watt’s enduring engagement with print as a key element of her material, conceptual, and community practice.
