STUDIO APPRENTICESHIP PROGRAM
The Apprenticeship Program, a program of our Undergrowth Educational Print Fund, is an exciting opportunity for emerging artists working in traditional print media to expand their skills in professional studio practices, technical printing proficiency and historical and contemporary knowledge by working in a fine art print publishing studio. The program aims to train two selected students per year with the skills needed to prepare them for a graduate level program, a master printer program, or the creation of their own print studio and studio practice.
Successful candidates show a strong passion for traditional printmaking, a keen awareness of social justice issues and the role of printmaking in addressing inequality — both traditionally, and in our time. The program also gives the apprentice the opportunity to further their own fine art practice by providing after-hours and weekend access to the print studio, along with guidance from master printers and visiting artists.
Applications are currently closed for our 2025/2026 Studio Apprenticeship Positions
The program aims to provide awardees with the skills needed to pursue a graduate level program, a master printer program, or the creation of their own print studio and studio practice. Duties of awardees include assisting as a studio apprentice three days per week, while working on fine art print publishing projects with visiting artists of national and regional caliber.
In return, awardees will receive a monthly stipend, stipend for supplies, 24/7 studio and equipment access, designated studio space, and mentorship from master printers and visiting artists. Awardees are expected to use the opportunity to further their own fine art practice in traditional print media and, with the support of Mullowney Printing staff, produce a small exhibition at the end of their time at Mullowney Printing.
Successful candidates show a strong passion for traditional printmaking, a keen awareness of social justice issues and the role of printmaking in addressing inequality — both traditionally, and in our time.
Current Apprentice
We are pleased to welcome Jess O’Farrell as our Fall / Winter 2025 recipient of our annual Studio Apprenticeship program! Johnson will serve as the Studio Apprentice for six months, beginning in October and culminating in an exhibition and artist talk at Mullowney Printing to mark the completion of their residency.
Jess O’Farrell is an artist and printmaker currently residing in Portland, Oregon. In 2015 they graduated from the California Institute of Art with a BFA and in 2025 received a MFA in printmaking from the Pacific Northwest College of Art. Their art practice reimagines reverence and the sacred through a queer lens while expanding the possibilities of traditional print media.
FORMER Apprentices
This program is funded through Mullowney Printing’s Undergrowth Educational Print Fund (UEPF). UEPF began in 2021 with the mission to support and nurture artists’ careers as printmakers and practicing studio artists. This program offers enriching opportunities for artists working in traditional print media to expand their technical skills and knowledge base through learning experiences in a professional print studio.
